  • A concerned citizen saw a bear cub in a tree close to a local highway in the town of Shandaken, Ulster County, and called Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Adam Johnson.

DEC biologists had placed traps, in an attempt to capture a bear cub, in that area. The cub was successfully captured in one of them as ECO Johnson looked on, who then brought the cub to a wildlife rehabilitator qualified to care for young bears.

The small bear was severely dehydrated and malnourished, weighing approximately 10 pounds. Bear cubs this time of year should be close to 50 pounds and hibernating in dens. This bear's survival is even more impressive considering that temperatures in the area were well below freezing for weeks prior to its capture.

  • I had a few stressful moments today. I got some more bad news about a disability waiver I’m trying to get for Anna. She falls in a unique category because of her #raredisorder so there is a chance she might not get approval and I found out the odds are against her. I have to prove that my daughter is disabled so I can get a waiver so I can get secondary insurance. She can’t sweat, she has to be in water for hours a day, her hands get tight and she can hardly use them, the skin on her feet make it painful to walk and effect her balance, if she gets any type of wound it could turn into a full body infection so as a byproduct she will always be in and out of hospitals ..... but her brain works. It seems ridiculous that a cognitive delay is the only thing that falls into a disability category and that after everything this child has gone through someone could possibly say she isn’t disabled. The respect I have for moms fighting to get help for their children is through the roof right now. On a positive note we did get out this afternoon for a little walk when it was cool enough and right before I realized I forgot my sons doctor appointment 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ #waivers #hotmess #ulstercountyny @ulstercountyexecutivepatryan #letschangethis

  • One of the things I don't like about self-employment is the isolation of working at home. There's a thin line between talking to the cats and #crazycatlady. Today I headed over to @roughdraftny to work in the morning. I switched it up and had lunch at @breadalonebakery in Woodstock, then spent the afternoon working in the Woodstock Library. Exploring the #catskills and #hudsonvalley one town at a time!

  • Have you been able to enjoy the view from one of the Catskills Fire Towers? Located on Red Hill, Balsam Lake Mountain, Mount Tremper, Overlook Mountain and Hunter Mountain, these towers, some built a century ago, were used for early detection of forest fires throughout New York state because of their extensive views of the surrounding countryside. Today, just five towers remain on summits in the Catskill Park and are maintained with assistance from a dedicated group of volunteers from the @catskillcenter (the Catskills Fire Tower Project) through an agreement with the @nysdec. During the summer months our volunteers open up the tower cabins for visitors to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the region. The five towers make for some of the best hiking destinations in the Catskills, offering unparalleled 360-degree views of the surrounding Catskill Park and mountains. They are well worth the time and effort it takes to hike to each tower.
.
Can’t make it to the mountaintop? The Catskills Visitor Center is now home to the 80-foot tall Upper Esopus Fire Tower. The tower offers 360-degree views of the Esopus Valley and the surrounding mountains.

  • 💞🐈🌟🐕 Announcing another local advocacy organization coming to HV Vegfest: NEW YORK STATE HUMANE ASSOCIATION!! New York State Humane Association (NYSHA)'s guiding philosophy is to reduce animal suffering, to prevent animal cruelty, and to encourage compassion for all beings. Their programs include assisting law enforcement and cruelty investigators in fighting the abuse of animals, providing the community with educational resources and referral services, celebrating local leaders in the movement through award ceremonies, and coordinating animal rescue operations. They even have a YouTube series called "Conversations with Mocha" - named after the cat who generously donates her home to host interviews between Pat Valusek (NYSHA president) and community members involved in the protection and care of animals.
