If something doesn’t seem right it is WELL WORTH the time and hassle to call your insurance and the provider to make sure you aren’t being over charged.
In this case I received a bill for some of the fertility testing we had started, even though we had been assured the testing would be covered by insurance. 😐 $495 was a shock but I was sure they had told us it would be covered.
For a brief moment I almost paid it, but then I remembered @savemycents talking about all the medical bills she has had to challenge so I gave it a try - and sure enough, someone had coded the original service incorrectly. They assured me they will fix this issue and I will get a statement reflecting that I owe $0. 🙌🏻🎉
Talk about return on time invested!!
Pay attention to your medical procedures and the bills you receive, it’s very possible that catching a mistake could save you hundreds!

💥STOP CALLING IT HEALTH CARE💥
The amount we spend on medical services far out weighs what we spend on healthy activities and behaviours!
Health care services only provide small effects on our health and well being, whereas healthy behaviours have a far bigger effects.
We need to shift a substantial proportion our attention, focus, and money away from medical services and insurances etc and reinvest them more on things that can have larger effects on our health.
Health care doesn’t make you healthy!

“I’m a diabetic here for a routine eye exam.”
Unfortunately those are two unique types of eye exams and they are billed very differently (medical vs. vision insurance).
🛑 A MEDICAL eye exam:
The eye is one of few places where an examiner can observe in real time intact blood vessels. This window allows a well trained Optometrist or Ophthalmologist to observe changes in the eye related to high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, cancer, etc. The inside of the eye has the potential to develop conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts: all of which can lead to some level of vision impairment. These conditions are just some of the more common conditions evaluated during a comprehensive medical eye exam.
With a medical exam, the doctor will coordinate care with other doctors regarding the health of the eye. For example, a diabetic eye examination letter will be sent to the primary care physician and endocrinologist.
🛑 A ROUTINE eye exam is more of a classic exam to determine a prescription for glasses. During the exam there is an overall evaluation of the eye to make sure there’s no medical issues arising.
⁉️The question regarding correct billing comes up everyday at our offices. Medical eye exams are not allowed to be billed to vision insurance (in most cases). As doctors we are legally bound to follow healthcare guidelines regarding billing insurance.
As we are all taught in school the chief complaint drives the reason for the visit and if it is a medical complaint it must be billed medically.
✅As a patient the best thing to do is talk with the office prior to your examination and provide them with all of your insurance information (both vision and medical).
✅As a provider and providers office it is important to educate the patient on the exam that is being completed.
❓As a practitioner how do you handle this in your office? As a patient what questions do you have?

Medical insurance and women medical needs, are not things that work together. That is a problem.
This past winter I found out I needed to have ovarian and uterine surgery. One surgery was covered by my insurance, one wasn’t.
I couldn’t afford the surgeon/ USR surgery without insurance. So it was originally planned that USR surgeon would talk my doctor through the surgery. Due to my doctor being specialized in endometriosis not USR.
However, my doctor decided that maybe it was best she only do the surgery she was specialized in. Which left me not being able to pay for one of my very expensive surgeries. (I fully respect her backing out though.) Unfortunately due to my heart abnormalities, it is best for me that I do the surgeries together. Which not only saves money, but has me going under anesthesia once.
Long story short we are almost to winter again and I haven’t had my surgeries. My endometriosis still flares up, and I am in chronic pain.
Periods are not fun and endometriosis makes it that much harder. However, there is one thing in my arsenal that I’m sure to pull out during my abnormal cycle.
And that’s my THINX underwear.
Honestly I don’t see how everyone doesn’t own at least 7 pairs!!!! That is if you’re like me and dealing with chronic periods and wanting to function in society.
This underwear is leak proof and magical. It is the one thing good about my period. Not to forget Thinx are washable and reusable! Sustainable underwear that protects your jeans from period stains!
Who would of thought you could be on your period and actually feel protected.
